Part D Prescription Drug Plans in Palm Beach County
Part D is Medicare's prescription coverage, sold by private insurers. The plan with the smallest premium is often the one that costs you the most after your actual drugs are priced.
The way to compare is to run each drug, at your dose and your pharmacy, through every plan's drug list. We do that each fall for people from Tequesta to Boca Raton, whether they fill at a chain store on Military Trail or a small pharmacy near home.
- Priced on your prescriptions, not the premium
- Your pharmacy changes what each refill costs
- Drug lists reset every January 1
- Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs if your income is limited
We'll price your prescriptions on real plans
Call with your medications and the pharmacy you use. We'll total the premium, deductible and every copay on the Part D plans we carry, and call you back during business hours with the numbers.

How it works
Three things set what you pay
-
The drug list
Every plan has its own formulary, the list of drugs it covers. If yours isn't listed, you pay full price or ask for an exception. -
The tier
Covered drugs sit in tiers, from cheap generics up to specialty drugs. The same drug can be on a low tier with one plan and a high tier with another. -
The pharmacy
Preferred pharmacies usually charge less than standard ones. Two stores a mile apart on the same road can have different copays for the same refill.

How we compare Part D plans for you
-
1
List every prescription
Include the strength and how often you take it. Bring the bottles or a printout from your pharmacy so nothing is guessed.
-
2
Name your pharmacies
The one you use in Palm Beach County, any you use in another state, and whether you'd try mail order. Preferred status can matter as much as the plan.
-
3
Total the full year
Premium, deductible and every expected copay, added together. A monthly premium alone tells you little.
-
4
Check again every fall
Drug lists and tiers change January 1. Last year's best plan may not be next year's.
Watch out
Late penalties and help paying for drugs
Go 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage after you first qualify, and Medicare adds a penalty to your Part D premium for as long as you have Part D. It's small each month but adds up over a long retirement. It's one of the Medicare mistakes we'd most like you to skip.
If money is tight, Extra Help from Social Security can lower or wipe out your Part D premium and deductible. Florida's Medicare Savings Programs, run by the Department of Children and Families, can pay your Part B premium, and getting one also qualifies you for Extra Help. You can apply online through MyACCESS or on paper. For free help with either, call SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders), Florida's free Medicare counseling program, at 1-800-963-5337. Our Palm Beach County senior resources page lists more.
Job, TRICARE or VA drug coverage may count
Drug coverage through an employer, TRICARE or the VA that counts as creditable usually keeps the penalty away. Keep the yearly letter that says your coverage is creditable.
Most Advantage plans already include drugs
If your Medicare Advantage plan has drug coverage, don't buy a separate Part D plan. A stand-alone drug plan can cancel your Advantage enrollment.
- Enroll when you first qualify so no penalty follows you
- A separate Part D plan goes with Medigap, not with most Advantage plans
- Ask your doctor about a generic before paying a specialty tier
- Before hurricane season, keep a list of your drugs and doses where you can grab it
Cost stages
Deductible, copays and the yearly cap
| Stage | What happens | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Deductible | Some plans have you pay a deductible before they pay. Others skip it for low-cost tiers. | A $0 deductible doesn't mean a lower total. Check the copays after it. |
| Initial coverage | You pay a copay or a percentage at each fill, and the plan covers the rest. | The tier sets this amount. Your drug might be tier 2 on one plan and tier 4 on another. |
| Catastrophic / annual cap | Once your own drug costs reach the yearly limit, you pay nothing more for covered drugs that year. | This helps most with brand-name or specialty drugs. |
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan
You can spread your out-of-pocket drug costs into monthly payments instead of paying a large amount at the counter early in the year. The total stays the same. You sign up with your drug plan, and we can show you how.
Every fall
A yearly look at your prescriptions
Each Part D plan can change its premium, deductible, drug list, tiers and preferred pharmacies for the new year. Your prescriptions may not be the same as last year, either. The plan that was cheapest for you last January can be one of the priciest next year.
Between October 15 and December 7, we run your current drug list through the plans we carry again and tell you whether staying or switching costs less over the year. When staying is cheaper, we say so. See Annual Open Enrollment for the dates, or switching your Medicare plan for changes at other times.

Part D across Palm Beach County
We compare drug plans for people throughout the county, from Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens to Greenacres, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. The plans for sale and the pharmacies they prefer depend on your ZIP code. If your prescriptions come from doctors at Good Samaritan, Bethesda Hospital East, the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center or a practice up north, bring the exact drug names and doses so our numbers match what you fill. Find your town on our service areas page, or go to the Medicare plans overview.
