Switching Your Medicare Plan in Palm Beach County
Keeping the same Medicare plan should be something you decide each fall. Copays, drug tiers and networks change every January, and a plan that fit you three years ago in Greenacres or Palm Beach Gardens may cost more today.
Switching is usually simple once a Medicare window is open. This page shows how to tell whether you can change now, and what to compare before you do.
- Learn whether a window is open for you now
- Keep the doctors and drugs you depend on
- Free review, with no pressure to change
- Help for year-round and part-year residents

Eligibility
Which window fits your situation
| Window | Dates | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Open Enrollment | Oct 15 to Dec 7 | Change Advantage plans, change Part D plans, or return to Original Medicare |
| Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment | Jan 1 to Mar 31 | Make one change if you're already on an Advantage plan |
| Special Enrollment Period | Triggered by an event | A permanent move, losing job coverage, qualifying for Extra Help, your plan leaving the area, or a declared emergency that kept you from acting |
| Medigap plan change | Any time | Apply for a new Supplement plan. In Florida this usually means health questions unless a guaranteed issue right applies |
Moving your permanent home can open a window
A new permanent address outside your plan's service area opens a Special Enrollment Period. That includes moving to Palm Beach County from another state, or leaving it. Time spent at a seasonal home doesn't count as a move, but an Advantage plan can drop you if you're away more than six months in a row.
Reasons
Good reasons to take another look
- Your doctor or hospital left the plan's network
- A drug moved to a higher tier or came off the list
- Your Medigap premium went up again
- Copays at routine visits are more than you expected
- You now qualify for Extra Help or a Florida Medicare Savings Program
- You moved, retired or lost job coverage
- You started spending more of the year in another state
A switch isn't always the answer. Sometimes the plan you have is still the best we can find for you in Palm Beach County, and keeping it is the right move. We'll tell you that directly. We'd rather help you for years than move you into a new plan for one season.

Changing plans in Palm Beach County
Here, most switching questions come back to hospitals. Advantage plans sold in the county differ on which systems they include, and the hospitals are split among several owners, from St. Mary's and Good Samaritan in West Palm Beach to Bethesda Hospital East and Boca Raton Regional Hospital in the south. Those contracts can change at renewal. During cancer care, confirm your oncologist is in the new plan before you switch. Veterans who use the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center should think about how VA care fits with any new plan. Not sure we cover your town? See our service areas.
If your income is limited, a Florida Medicare Savings Program through the Department of Children and Families may pay your Part B premium and also qualify you for Extra Help. Process
How a switch works
-
1
Gather what you have
Your plan card, your drug list and the names of the doctors you want to keep, here and in any other state.
-
2
Compare full-year costs
Premium, deductible, copays, network and drug tiers, totaled for twelve months instead of one.
-
3
Confirm the window
We make sure you're allowed to switch and confirm the start date before you sign anything.
-
4
Enroll and watch the handoff
We submit the application, look for the confirmation, and make sure the old plan ends the day the new one starts.
