Medicare in Boynton Beach

What to know about Medicare in Boynton Beach

The city takes its name from Maj. Nathan Boynton of Port Huron, Michigan, who opened the Boynton Hotel near the beach in 1897. The town was platted in 1898 and incorporated in 1920. Its first settlers, many of them from Michigan, grew pineapples, tomatoes and citrus and shipped them north on the Florida East Coast Railway. Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park sits just north of the old hotel site. The 2020 census counted 80,380 people. Green Cay Wetlands is out on the west side, and the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge lies beyond it.

Baptist Health runs both hospitals here. Bethesda Hospital East is on S. Seacrest Blvd. Bethesda Hospital West is out on Boynton Beach Blvd. in the 33472 ZIP code. Being in the same system doesn't promise the same treatment in every plan, so check the hospital nearest you by name. Delray Medical Center and Boca Raton Regional are short trips south. A Supplement lets you use any of them that take Medicare. Prescriptions then need their own Part D plan.

Hurricane season is worth planning around when you pick a drug plan. When a disaster or emergency is declared, Medicare drug plans lift their refill-too-soon limits, allow a larger supply when one is available, and cover drugs at out-of-network pharmacies if you can't reach your usual one. Florida law sets a similar early-refill rule for state-licensed insurers once a county is under a hurricane warning or a state of emergency. If a declared emergency kept you from making a plan change you were eligible for, Medicare can open a special enrollment period. Call 1-800-MEDICARE to ask.

The Boynton Beach City Library is at 115 N. Federal Hwy., (561) 742-6390. Out west, the county's West Boynton Branch is at 9451 Jog Rd. Palm Tran buses cost $1 a ride with a Medicare card. Riders who can't use the bus because of a disability can apply for Palm Tran CONNECTION shared rides. For free Medicare counseling, SHINE answers at 1-800-963-5337. Common questions

Questions we hear from Boynton Beach

Can I refill my prescriptions early before a hurricane?
Usually, once an emergency or disaster is declared. Medicare drug plans then lift their refill-too-soon limits and can allow a larger supply. For coverage from a Florida-licensed insurer, state law requires at least a 30-day early refill once your county is under a hurricane warning or a state of emergency, as long as refills remain on the prescription. Ask your pharmacy as soon as the warning goes up.
Are Bethesda East and Bethesda West in the same plan networks?
Often, but check each one. Both belong to Baptist Health South Florida, yet an Advantage plan lists hospitals one at a time. Tell us which Bethesda you'd use and we'll confirm it for every plan we compare.
Is there a set time to change Medicare plans in Boynton Beach?
Yes. From October 15 through December 7, anyone with Medicare can switch Advantage plans, move back to Original Medicare or pick a new drug plan for the coming year. People who already have a Medicare Advantage plan get one more chance from January 1 to March 31 to switch plans or return to Original Medicare.
